My Take on CFB Night Games on ABC/ESPN2
(5) USC vs. (10) Oregon
The reign of the USC Trojans in the Pac-10 will be on the line today. Two years ago, behind Dennis Dixon, they beat USC, but he got injured and they never recovered. USC hasn't won in Oregon for a few years either against Oregon St. or Oregon. It's a tough place to play.
Oregon needs this win for a signature victory. They played Boise St. on national tv and got embarassed by BSU and LeGarrette Blount's punch. They beat Utah then-ranked #18 and Cal then-ranked #6. It was the Utes only loss, while Cal has fallen down since that loss. So this game will be big for them and their BCS aspiration.
Oregon's key to victory is QB Jeremiah Masoli. He needs to run the spread offense well and pass well to win. Contrary to many analyst's comments, USC hasn't struggled against the spread offense, like in years past. Their defense has more discipline this year. They lost to Washington, but it was due to turnovers and a backup qb. The last two weeks, two traditional pass qbs have had a field day in the 4th quarter nearly beating USC both times, but they held on to victory.
USC must establish the run early, setting up the pass. Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley must avoid interceptions and deal with the crowd at Autzen Stadium. Many great SC qb's have gone there and lost in recent years. USC has a great record againstg ranked teams on the road and must be ready for the most difficult game of the year. After this, the schedule is a little bit easier than the first nine games, including six games on the road.
(3) Texas vs. (14) Oklahoma St.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys have waited for this game for more than a year after scaring the Texas Longhorns last year in Austin. OSU has put up big numbers on offense, but with Dez Bryant, who is suspended indefintely due to contact with Deoin Sancers, it's going to be tough.
Oklahome State hasn't beaten Texas since 1997, but the last two years the games have been close. Two years in Stillwater, Oklahoma State was up by 21 points, but Colt McCoy engineered a great comeback and they won 38-35. Last year, two big defensive stands won the game for the Cowboys in Austin preserved a 28-24 victory.
The key to this game is the Qb Zac Robinson vs the UT defense. The Longhorn defense has been great this year and leading the way all season with turnovers and stingy defense. They are playing a great scheme and will have to do the same tonight to beat Oklahoma St. I believe a great defense always beats a good offense.
The Texas offense finally had a break out game last week against Missouri, winning 41-7. They have struggled most of the year as McCoy has thrown 8 interceptions. Mind you, they beat up on Missouri, who was overmatched and couldn't compete with the Longhorns. The offense will have to get going early to win this game instead of relying on the defense and special teams.
Oklahoma St. really hasn't beaten anybody this year. The only game that mattered with a top 25 team, Houston, and they lost at home. UT needs a victory, like this, over a top 25 team to help them in the BCS Standings and bring them closer to the Alabama and Florida. At this point, if Texas doesn't win out with their schedule and make the national championship, it will be embarassing after last year's debacle.

NAHJ To Host Region 5 Conference in Houston Mar. 19-20
NAHJ Region 5,
First off, we are meeting in Houston and the board is having a great time in Houston. I would like to thank all the NAHJ Region 5 Members for attending the Houston meeting last night. It was a great showing and one of the best-attended receptions for a NAHJ Board meeting. Moreso, it was wonderful to see all the young people, mostly from the University of Houston, who will be starting a student chapter soon. Thanks and you'all made Region 5 look good.
At the reception, we announced NAHJ will be holding its Region 5 Regional Conference at Rice University on March 19-20. We will be working with the Houston Area Hispanic Media Professionals, who will hold a town hall meeting on March 19 at Rice University. On March 20, we will have an all-day event with multimedia tracks and workshops about broadcast, print and new media. Houston area professionals are already stepping up to volunteer for the workshops and helping with registration. In addition, for journalists who have lost their jobs, there will be a discount and we will raffle off a couple of airline flights to Houston to make it more affordable. We'll also work on finding a location to host a reception at a nightclub on Saturday night. We plan to work with the Hilton Las Americas in downtown as the host hotel. When we make decision on those arrangements, I will inform you.
We also are working on putting on some one-day multimedia training seminars in El Paso and the Austin area. We are still working on the dates and information about those seminars. Ideally, we will bring in trainers to teach us multimedia skills and then give the attendees time to practice it. We will have workshops about social media and ways to market your work online. Again, when we make the final arrangements, we will let you know, but I am targeting late January and mid-February for these events.
Region 5 wants to provide our members a chance to be ready for the ever changing world of new media. These training sessions will be your opportunity to get hands-on training. In this tough job market, we want you to be prepared and ready to do anything just in case you lose your job. I hope you attend and take advantage of these workshops and conferences.
Please, don't forget to follow us on our social media accounts on Twitter at NAHJRegion5 and Facebook at NAHJ Region 5. I post the same announcements on my personal Twitter and Facebook accounts. You can follow me at Twitter at mannydelarosa68 and Facebook at mannydelarosa.
Thanks, again, for being members of NAHJ and we look forward to seeing you at one of these events. God Bless You'all!

New NAHJ Career Center; It's Free and Can Help You Find a Job
September 24, 2009
NAHJ’s New Online Career Center Is Here … and you need to be in it.
These are challenging times and you need all the help you can get.
That goes for you if you’re looking for jobs, freelance opportunities, and ways to market your skills and get your name out there.
That also goes for employers looking for good journalists with a mix of skills to put on staff, to hire as a contributor or freelancer, and producers looking for commentators or colleagues with expertise on certain topics and trends.
You should all come to NAHJ’s new and revamped Career Center now. We are building the largest pool of resumes and information about Latino journalists to help make these connections happen. This clearinghouse is fully searchable, making it easier for journalists, freelancers, journalism educators, recruiters, producers and all those who have and who seek talent to connect in a more targeted and effective way.
And you need to be a part of it.
Job seekers can post resumes confidentially if they like, get email alerts when certain types of jobs are posted, and target their search for full-time jobs or freelancing opportunities. Employers can post jobs directly, but also gain access to a pool of resumes of Latino journalists that keeps growing by the day.
Anyone can search the job listings, but to post your resume, apply for jobs online and take advantage of all the features that make your job search easier, you must be a member of NAHJ. Whether you have a job, are currently unemployed, freelancing or handling your own journalism business, posting your resume is a must to get work, get tapped for your expertise, and promote yourself, which is essential in today’s news media environment.
To join or renew your membership, click here. If you are joining for the first time or had let your membership lapse, join or renew now and your membership is good until December 31, 2010, a full 15 months for the price of a year! To access the new Career Center powered by ihispano.com, go to www.nahj.org and click on the “ Career Center ” button on the top right corner.
Employers can: pay to post jobs individually or as a package, purchase access to the resume database in monthly intervals, or can become a corporate member of NAHJ and have unlimited job postings and access to the resume database for a year, in addition to a series of other benefits. Employers, for more info, go to the Career Center and click on “Employers” in the navigation bar. For NAHJ corporate membership info and a listing of benefits, click here.
To log in to the Career Center , use the same username and password as you would for NAHJ’s Members Only page. For assistance with the log in, contact Paulo Luizaga , NAHJ’s Membership and Chapter Services Coordinator at (202) 662-7460 or at pluizaga@nahj.org.
So don’t miss out. Look for jobs or post some. Post your resume or, if you’re an employer, look through what will soon be the largest pool of Latino journalists out there. The Career Center will also help NAHJ serve its members as we develop and enhance careers, target colleagues for training we or others provide, and market journalists’ experience and expertise.
But to be part of all this, you have to be in it. So go to the Career Center and post your resume or jobs today! In these times, you can’t afford to lose out. Act now!

Region 5 October Update
Region 5 Members,
We are now in the middle of October. Our hope of raising the $300,000 for Count Me In Campaign for the budget shortfall is getting closer, yet we are at about one-quarter of our goal. We know it's a tough time economically, but we are asking you for your support to keep the many programs we have going for the organization. NAHJ has done a lot of students, young professionals and veterans in this business so we ask for your support. For more information, go to http://www.nahj.org/supportnahj/CountMeIn.shtml
I am still in the midst of planning a regional conference for next year. We are strugging with the dates, which is the holdup right now. I am still trying to negotiate a better date, but it's either will be during Spring Break or around Easter, which I am not sure will be successful time for our members.
The NAHJ Board will be meeting in Houston next week from Thursday to Saturday. Our meetings will be held at the Houston Chronicle. We will be having a reception being sponsored by Continental Airlines on Friday night from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm at Churrascos River Oaks 2055 Westheimer Houston, Tx 713-527-8300. We invited all Region 5 members to attend.

Below is a link to a story in the New Times of Broward/Palm Beach, Florida about NAHJ member McNelly Torres, who had been an investigative consumer watch dog reporter at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel before being laid off several months ago.
She had been working on a story about supermarket food inspections at the time.
According to this story, the paper just ran McNelly's story this past weekend, while giving her "contributing" credit at the end and misspelling her name, though she is the one who did the research on it.
McNelly sent this link to me. She also happens to be on the board of Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. (IRE):

Alice Leaders and Doctors Learn About H1N1
Doctors and community leaders gathered at Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice to learn about the H1N1 virus. Unlike big cities or even Corpus Christi, Jim Wells County has no health district. Area leaders get their guidance on health issues from the Texas Health Department based in Harlingen, which is more than 100 miles away.
So today, Dr. Earl Matthew, who is an Infectious Disease Doctor in Corpus Christi at Christus Spohn Hospital, gave a 90 minute presentation during a lunchtime meeting for Alice City leaders, Jim Wells County leaders and area doctors.
Dr. Matthew talked about symptoms to recognize for the H1N1, the vaccine that is coming out and prevention methods, such as covering your cough and washing your hands. He also gave tips on how to prevent the spread of the virus in city and county offices.
"We discussed how it's transmitted, basically through the cough and collection of wet droplets and on our hands," said Dr. Mathew.
County leaders, like Sheriff Oscar Lopez, walked away with vital information to share with his staff.
"They taught us how to take care of ourselves, take care of other people from getting this virus. If we all do our work together, it will be fine," said Sheriff Lopez.
Infectious Disease doctor report getting the vaccine will protect you from getting the virus. They claim if you get the shot, it's about 85 percent chance you won't come down with the swine flu.
"The vaccine is coming out as quickly to this H1N1 as we've ever produced and it will be widely distributed as it becomes available," Dr. Mathew said.
All the information was taken in by a handful of leaders. Many will take back the information to their employees who work with the public.
"I think it's important that we continue to protect the people who have constant contact with the public and to be able to give them information how to protect themselves," said Dr. Rito Silva, who is the Alice Mayor.
