NAHJ Region 5,
First off, we are meeting in Houston and the board is having a great time in Houston. I would like to thank all the NAHJ Region 5 Members for attending the Houston meeting last night. It was a great showing and one of the best-attended receptions for a NAHJ Board meeting. Moreso, it was wonderful to see all the young people, mostly from the University of Houston, who will be starting a student chapter soon. Thanks and you'all made Region 5 look good.
At the reception, we announced NAHJ will be holding its Region 5 Regional Conference at Rice University on March 19-20. We will be working with the Houston Area Hispanic Media Professionals, who will hold a town hall meeting on March 19 at Rice University. On March 20, we will have an all-day event with multimedia tracks and workshops about broadcast, print and new media. Houston area professionals are already stepping up to volunteer for the workshops and helping with registration. In addition, for journalists who have lost their jobs, there will be a discount and we will raffle off a couple of airline flights to Houston to make it more affordable. We'll also work on finding a location to host a reception at a nightclub on Saturday night. We plan to work with the Hilton Las Americas in downtown as the host hotel. When we make decision on those arrangements, I will inform you.
We also are working on putting on some one-day multimedia training seminars in El Paso and the Austin area. We are still working on the dates and information about those seminars. Ideally, we will bring in trainers to teach us multimedia skills and then give the attendees time to practice it. We will have workshops about social media and ways to market your work online. Again, when we make the final arrangements, we will let you know, but I am targeting late January and mid-February for these events.
Region 5 wants to provide our members a chance to be ready for the ever changing world of new media. These training sessions will be your opportunity to get hands-on training. In this tough job market, we want you to be prepared and ready to do anything just in case you lose your job. I hope you attend and take advantage of these workshops and conferences.
Please, don't forget to follow us on our social media accounts on Twitter at NAHJRegion5 and Facebook at NAHJ Region 5. I post the same announcements on my personal Twitter and Facebook accounts. You can follow me at Twitter at mannydelarosa68 and Facebook at mannydelarosa.
Thanks, again, for being members of NAHJ and we look forward to seeing you at one of these events. God Bless You'all!
